A colossal angry tomato roars in rage at the crest of a breaking tidal wave, while behind it another irate nightshade terrorizes a cityscape.

Mistigram: Originally intended as vegetarian menu art for the IMBIBE01 food-themed e-mag, Cthulu adapted the poster to the 1978 B-movie #AttackOfTheKillerTomatoes to #ANSIart with help from LDA and Moth. It was included in the spooky MIST1024 artpack released one year ago.

A young woman in shorts and a slip sits in a darkened computer room, lit solely by the illumination provided by the display.

Mistigram: around the turn of the century Cthulu would make his way to the West End apartment of [personal profile] blaine and [personal profile] maureen and they would have late-night, all-night binges on curated cultural selections. For a time it was Kieślowski's Dekalog, and later it was the subject of this #ANSIart illustration, 1998's #SerialExperimentsLain series. This portrait of #LainIwakura and #theWired was included in last month's #anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection.

A biker catches a glowing speck in his red-gloved hands, before the ruins of Neo-Tokyo s 2020 Olympic village.

Mistigram: If last month's #anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection hadn't contained a piece of fanart for #KatsuhiroOtomo's #Akira, it would simply have been incomplete. Cthulu had to oblige, adapting this late scene of biker #Kaneda and the film's logo to #ANSIart.

An idol in fancy dress wipes blood off of her face.

Mistigram: this #ANSIart portrait of #MimaKirigoe from #SatoshiKon's 1997 #PerfectBlue was drawn by Cthulu and included in last month's #anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection.

A stout pig-faced man in a white trenchcoat and hat stands before a brilliant sunset at the end of a windy pier.

Mistigram: this iconic moment from #StudioGhibli's 1992 #PorcoRosso was illustrated in #ANSIart by Cthulu (easy linework) and LDA (incredible sunset engineer) for last month's #anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection. “I'd rather be a pig than a fascist.”

A man with a perceptive gaze, a sharp nose and big hair, all rendered in black and red, glances sideways at the viewer. In the bottom left, Japanese letting spells out the name of his program: Cowboy Bebop.

Mistigram: "I think it's time we blow this scene. Get everybody and the stuff together. Okay, three, two, one let's jam." For last month's #anime - themed MIST0825 artpack collection, Cthulu adapted to #ANSIart this brief monochrome portrait of #SpikeSpiegel 18 seconds into the #CowboyBebop opening sequence.

A knife-wielding masked, maned feral warrior woman stands on the rooftop with clouds and the night sky behind her. Underneath, before red stone inlay read Japanese characters spelling out the name of her movie: MONONOKE HIME

Mistigram: Cthulu felt awfully normcore (not a way he feels often!) cooking up a list of his favorite #anime and realising just how many of them were #StudioGhibli productions, but their output is solid even if his engagement with the genre is relatively superficial. He drew this #ANSIart tribute to 1997's #PrincessMononoke (with help from LDA and ConsoleJockey) for the new anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection.

A masked man in tuxedo and top hat poses against the starry night sky

Mistigram: contemporary to our Mist Classic artpacks of the mid-'90s, Cthulu's girlfriend (then described in our pages as 'the rainbow-haired demon of death') was a big fan of #SailorMoon, finally airing dubbed at that time in North America. Thinking back to that big #anime moment in the cultural mainstream, one of the first on his radar, he drew this #ANSIart portrait of Sailor Moon's partner #TuxedoMask (with help from LDA) for the new anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection.

Oshira-sama, a rotund radish spirit wearing an upturned sake bowl as a hat and a tiny red privacy cloth around his midsection, conceals a young girl behind his crisp, spicy bulk as they travel upward in a cramped elevator together.

Mistigram: Cthulu adapted to #ANSIart this scene from #StudioGhibli's 2001 #SpiritedAway where Sen squeezes into an onsen elevator with Radish Spirit. It was included in the new #anime-themed MIST0825 artpack collection.

A stylized noseless black-and-white cat, wearing a red ribbon bow, leans up from its purple surface and waves its paw hello, smiling, against a green background.

Mistigram: providing a little connective tissue between our #cat-filled July and our #anime August, here is a flat toon #ANSIart portrait of Katy (aka Chao) from 1981's The Fantastic Adventures of #Unico, based on the manga by #OsamuTezuka. Cthulu made this rather unlikely selection to adapt as Unico was the sole specimen of anime in his family's media collection growing up.

A grey and white shorthaired housecat, resplendent in mousie necktie, stares back at you out of a round flagged starburst frame, secure in the knowledge that even in death, he has a larger social media following than you do.

Mistigram: in the first decade of this new century, Cute Overload and I Can Has Cheezburger? testified to the self-evident truth that the Internet was, on a fundamental level, for sharing funny cat-related content, and all other applications for it were kind of secondary. From this milieu emerged Jason "Textfiles" Scott's cat Sockington, who over the course of a decade accumulated over a million Twitter followers. Though Socks died in 2022, a good cat is never forgotten, so when Cthulu was coming up with the short list of celebrated cats to enshrine in #ANSIart in last month's #cat-themed MIST0725 artpack collection, this hep cat invariably stalked its way to the top of the pile. LDA and Moth assisted in locking down this adaptation of a 2009 t-shirt design originally by Megan Hopkins and R. Stevens.

Against a yellow backdrop, a hip, sassy, urban street cat grimaces eXtReMely in a kind of intensely angry grin, head tilted at a jaunty angle.

Mistigram: nostalgia can move a reasonable person to do strange things. Case in point -- for the recent #cat-themed MIST0725 artpack collection, Cthulu tried to think of famous cats from the '90s, when #ANSIart was king, and reproduce them in that element for resonance synergy. This is why he for some reason thought it would be a good idea to draw the rear cover art to the 1991 album by Paula Abdul's "Opposites Attract" dance partner, #MCSkatKat, a real Poochie of a mascot.

A sad vestigial stickman with bags under his eyes and a few wavy strands of hair brandishes an excessively large spoon nearby to his relatively undersized bowl of food. Beneath and to the right stands an anthropomorphic banana.

Mistigram: racking his brain for period food-themed art to adapt to #ANSIart in order to celebrate the new IMBIBE01 e-mag release of food-themed articles and captures from the turn of the century, Cthulu's mind went back to #DonHertzfeldt's Oscar-winning 2000 short #Rejected. #MySpoonIsTooBig! #IAmABanana!

Two youths in traditional garb, including pom-pom hats, stare in bafflement at the word mist written in red in a white void

Mistigram: shortly after making a splash with his solo XBIn collection, Hortau stopped by our Discord to make a guest appearance in our MIST-30 30th anniversary celebration, with these two lads in whimsical hats. But what perplexity were they trying to wrap their heads around? Cthulu offered up some crude graffiti for them to stroke their chins at.

An abominable snowman roars, brandishing its claws in a futile gesture of frustration, upon observing that the skiier they were chasing and intending to consume has wiped out and buried himself in a snowbank.

Mistigram: for this date in last year's ADVENT23 #AdventCalendar, Cthulu manually made an #ANSIart reproduction of #pixelart sprites from Chris Pirih's #SkiFree, first included in 1991's Microsoft Entertainment Pack 3.

The cold-hearted Robot Santa Claus prepares to deliver a present to a naughty child in the form of the payload from a bazooka.

Mistigram: For today's date in last year's ADVENT23 #ANSIart #AdventCalendar, Cthulu drew this take on the homocidal #RobotSantaClaus from #Futurama. Both the 2023 and 24 calendars are bundled in Alpha's BBS door version of ADVENT24, now available for MS-DOS via https://github.com/robbiew/mg_advent_DOS

A tiny house with detatched garage, a giant smiling Jack o lantern, a leafless tree trunk, a church and a candy shop stand all in a row in an autumnal nighttime scene beneath a crescent moon.

Mistigram: this jolly little #Halloween village #ASCIIart scene is the handiwork of ldb (coloured by Cthulu!) and was used in an infofile in the spooky MIST1021 artpack collection released three years ago this month.

In garish, fauvist colours, a fish floats above a crowd of fervently outstretched hands reaching out from the sleeves of suit jackets, shooting multicoloured streaks and lightning bolts out of its fishy form. The top of the screen states the subject: FISH WORSHIP, and at the bottom the question is asked: IS IT WRONG?

Mistigram: if you were in the Pacific Northwest in the '90s, as [personal profile] nicheinterests was, the incredible #fish-themed art of Alaskan artist [Bad username or site: ray @ troll] was everywhere. The recent unthemed MIST0624 artpack collection was the perfect excuse for Cthulu to garishly adapt one of Ray's more surreal scenes into the #ANSIart graphics format the home computers of that era would have been using, because unbelievably we have no plans yet to release a fish-themed artpack. (Fish Worship, for the record, is never wrong, and is a protected right under the Constitution.)

A scantily-clad warrior woman, swinging a sword upthrust, rides a yellow pterodactyl through a smoky sky directly toward the viewer. Take cover!

Mistigram: at wit's end trying to think of iconic science fiction franchises whose distinctive typography hadn't yet been plundered for previous years' SF-themed artpacks in May, Cthulu stumbled upon #HeavyMetal... then continued stumbling all the way through #ChrisAchilleos' poster art of #Taarna for its 1981 movie, adapting it in #ANSIart as the MIST0524 artpack's infofile header.

A crazy-eyed green Jedi puppet goes off on a wild tangent in the swamp of Dagobah.

Mistigram: technically, this offbeat moment with the mystical green Muppet #Yoda is from 1980's the #EmpireStrikesBack, but it defines a whole new take on the character in Bad Lip Reading's 2016 #SeagullsStopItNow (which, if you haven't yet experienced it, you need to address immediately.) This jointly-created #ANSIart screen from last year's MIST0523 was started by Cthulu and polished off by LDA.

Hey, what's that stank? / (You put a fish in our basket!)
Ho ho ho ho yeah! / I forgot I did that
(You owe me an apology) / Just hold your breath and see
When the time is right / Birds will bite your face -- yea-ea-ea-ea-eah!
